内容简介：General equilibrium models of monopolistic competition in the spirit of Dixit and Stiglitz (1977) assume either that all consumers share a common utility function or that all consumers have identical utility functions. Do these different approaches yield similar predictions on product quantity, product diversity, and welfare? This paper answers this question by studying a model with the ability to capture both of these two approaches as well as the ability to include both homothetic and non-homothetic preferences. Two sets of results are obtained. First, for quantity and diversity, homothetic preferences are enough to say yes to the question. Second, for welfare, however, homothetic preferences are not enough to say yes. For the latter, utility functions need to be homogeneous of degree one.
